Summary: The young prince has some ideas about the differences between kings and queens.
Note(s): This is the opening piece for a new series/book that I've been thinking about, but I didn't really make any move to start until I had quite a vivid dream a few days ago. The world so far will be an alternate 1571 and I'm sure it won't be too hard to guess who the prince's mother is in this :P


“One day you'll be king,” Simon Bampton, his tutor, said to him.

“Like Mother?” Edward had immediately answered back.

“No, your mother is the Queen. You'll be the King.”

“Everyone will take orders from me?” Edward asked.

“Yes, of course Your Highness.”

“Then I'll be like Mother.”

Simon opened his mouth to speak. But closed it. He watched the young prince.

“What do you mean, Your Highness?”

“Everyone listens to mother while absolutely no one listens to Father. So that means I'll be the Queen.”

“But you are a boy.”

“So?” Edward said shrugging.

“Boys are kings, Edward. Girls are queens.”

Edward put down his quill.

“But they both function the same way, yes?”

“Well yes but-”

“Then I'll be the Queen,” Edward said. “Just like mother.”

Simon shook his head, but a small smile graced his face. The prince was quite the charge.

This is really cute, although I don't know enough about your 'verse to figure out who the queen is supposed to be. I really like how Edward says he'll be the Queen, because everyone listens to his mother and nobody listens to his father. He seems like a sweet kid, a little precocious and still mastering the art of tact. I hope he keeps his flexible ideas about gender when he grows up.
